As the first real implication of the collective defense principle of NATO, Operation Active Endeavor (OAE) stands as a historic landmark in the history of the North Atlantic Alliance. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NATO called on Article 5 of the Washington Treaty (the collective defense clause) for the first time in its history. OAE was the immediate maritime response to this invocation.
